Why We Need to Organize
by Ellen K. Jordan

We have become aware that we are disorganized. We see on television shows about decorating and organizing and we recognize that there is someone out there who can show us how to become organized.

Granted, it is for the most part a behavioral modification at best, and one hard change at worst. Many people have inquired about organizers but never seem to follow up. One reason that people don’t follow up is that they do not have time.

So therefore, what has and will forever be at the top of the list of items to learn about is Time Management. No matter how fast paced or slow paced you are this one factor always comes into use. We are all trying to get organized and stay organized. As our pace gets faster, we need to retrieve faster, find that suit faster, etc. Everything and everyone is running at top speed.

What will we do in the future? Where will we begin?

The most important thing to remember is don’t panic. Start with writing your goals. This is useful because once written you can visualize your goals. It is also important to take the time to plan how you spend your time. This is the key, it opens a new world for you, one that you can manage and even control in part.

Visualize that line you may have to wait on and how impatient you have been waiting on lines in the past, and consider that great book you want to read. Then bring that great book with you and make the wait less tiring and more comfortable. Don’t worry about the lugging or feeling foolish. Aren’t you one of the people looking over someone’s shoulder to get a glimpse at their book or newspaper? Well, with that book or any reading material it will make the time go by with less stress. Not only did you accomplish what you waited on line for, you also read the book you wanted to read forever. These little tips carry you through your daily routine, and help reduce stress.

We use the skill of multi-tasking when we are at work, so why not use it at home. Actually most of us do multi-task at home, we just don’t always recognize it as such. Consider bringing some of the skills that you use at the office into your home life. Time Management tools for example certainly have value at home. There is no reason why you can not plan your day and manage your time, with this comes more organizing skills.

An example of an organizing skill that we use at home without realizing that it is an organizing skill is when we decorate. When we decorate we organize. We change the furniture around by matching upholstery, pick up small pillows, and or candles that go with the new décor all of this is organizing and we do this regularly.

Why not do this with your papers and clothes and items that you touch daily. Wouldn’t it be nice to find what you are looking for again and again, instead of searching for the “I know where it is thingy”. I have seen places where people know exactly where everything is. The trouble is it takes them forever to get to the bottom of the pile. That’s generally where that “thingy” always lives, the bottom of a pile. Instead of having that pile, have just a small group of current and pending folders. This can help you save time and make it easier to find those items that you always need at hand.

Time management is the most effective organizing skill and it is often the most costly if not handled. Take the time to plan and prepare, because it appears that the pace will only increase from here.
