Cube The Clutter in Children's Rooms
by Karen Krugman

It's a common problem; Mom is standing in the middle of her child’s room looking at a tumble of clothes, toys, mementos all around her, what to do?

Cube It! I’ve found that setting up eight 15” wire cubes in any configuration is a great storage solution for books, dolls, moving vehicles (trucks, cars), games/puzzles... Adding open weave plastic baskets to the mix allows you to store all those little items—crafts, "Lego's", action characters, doll clothes/shoes. Label each basket, toss like items in a basket and put them in a cube. If you need more baskets, clear containers with covers enables you to stack two containers in one cube.

To tackle the clothes, sort through them. Toss or donate anything that no longer fits your child. Clothes that are stained or ripped can be thrown away. Socks without a partner can be tossed or saved for sock puppets or dusting.

For younger children arrange clothing into outfits. This makes it easier to get dressed each morning. Older children’s clothing should be organized by type—shirts, pants, pajamas, etc. It’s best to keep like colors together. Pair the socks and underwear and place a diamond shape drawer organizer in the sock/underwear drawer. Then put each pair of socks in a space. Same for underwear.

Now, for the mementos and school supplies. Install a bulletin board above your child’s desk or workspace. This way he or she can post those mementos for a while before tossing. The bulletin board is also a great place to keep track of important school information—upcoming tests, weekly homework assignments, school schedule.

The desk should have a place to store paper—clear expandable files are great for this purpose. A mini-tower of drawers in clear plastic is a wonderful storage place for calculators, scissors, pens/pencils, tape, erasers. Each drawer can be labeled so that the items can be easily returned to it’s home after use.

Where to get these supplies? Costco or Target for the Cube System. Target or the 99Cent Store for plastic containers, mini-tower drawers and diamond drawer organizers.
