The Art of Feng Shui ~ Introduction
by Ellen K. Jordan

There are very few writings about the origin of Feng Shui. There are some that believe Feng Shui's origins are in the 4th Century B.C.; others say that it developed over time throughout history, both are correct. Much of Feng Shui's teachings encompass common sense and thousands of years of Chinese Philosophies taken from Confucius, Buddha, and Tao.

Either way, this phenomenon has come to the Western World with a strong following. We are embracing Feng Shui in our daily lives from home, home office, office and even in our friendly conversations with passing acquaintances.

We are exchanging books and tips with friends daily to improve our environment and counteract the fast technological age we are living in. Moreover, there are Masters who have been called in to rid both offices and residences of bad Chi prior to occupation of said premises.

The Masters discuss the cosmic connections with the body. Focusing on harmony, balance with the soul, and the environment using interaction of the five elements and three major concepts.

The Five Elements are:

  • Fire

  • Earth

  • Metal

  • Water

  • Wood.

The Three Major Concepts are:

  • The flow of Energy

  • The balance of Yin and Yang

  • The Interaction of the Five Elements

It is said, that putting mirrors in tight corners scares away bad Chi or Sha Chi. Also, hanging crystals in specific places bring in good Chi. These and many more have enlightened the Westerner to the powers of Chi and the teachings of Feng Shui.

The analogy that life is a journey from one place to another is pleasing. You start out in a particular circumstance, but the choices and decisions you make determine your mode of transportation. The last three components of your destiny are the proactive things you can do to make changes along the way.

Some Important Advice

The first thing we come across when reading about Feng Shui, are instructions on how to read or use the book. These instructions should not be skipped. These instructions are essential to getting the most out of these teachings as you can. Even Feng Shui journals have a "Use Section" after the introduction. You want to be able to gain as much information in order for Feng Shui to benefit your lifestyle.
